For the last few chapters of John, Jesus has been performing many miracles and signs. Even with these miracles mixed with His incredible teaching...still many did not believe. "Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him."
Why? According to prophesy...
"He has blinded their eyes
and hardened their hearts,
so they can neither see with their eyes,
nor understand with their hearts,
nor turn—and I would heal them."
Their hearts were hardened...they were blind and could not recognize Jesus.
But...there were a few that believed. One was Mary, the sister of Lazarus. She knew Jesus...she was a devoted follower. She was not like her sister Martha...consumed with the preparation of the meal. Mary was relational. She knew Jesus. She was grateful for the miracle that Jesus had performed on her brother. She also loved Jesus for who He was. She was willing to spend a year's wages on this Jesus...to wash His feet....to lovingly clean. We get the sense that God had opened her eyes and her heart to the real identity of Jesus...."The Son of God."
